Maximize the potential of every student in the pursuit of excellence in Character Education |
|
Department programmes for 2012 |
Inculcating sound values in all our children is of paramount importance. With a firm belief that character makes a person, the Character & Citizenship Education Department introduced the following programmes:
- Fernvale Value Points (FVVP)
- Star Pupil Award
- Student Leadership Programme
- FRIENDS@Fernvale Programme
- Form Teacher Guidance Period
|
|
Fernvale Value Points (FVVP) |
Fernvale Values Points (FVVP) is an incentive-based initiative that was introduced in 2006. It focuses on using positive reinforcement to recognise students who exhibit good values through their actions. With the value cards collected, students can exchange them for playtime or stationery in the Kids@Work room. The redemption booth is managed by Prefects so as to create a platform for our student leaders to develop their spirit of service in school. |
|
Star Pupil Award is introduced in 2010 and serves as a reward for students in recognition of their commendable academic achievement and exemplary behavior. The nomination from form and subject teachers is based on a set of assessment criteria that focus on the student’s attitude, knowledge, behaviour and skill. |
|
Student Leadership Programme |
The school works to develop the leadership potential of all students in the school based on the SE competencies as we believe that every child is a leader. Level I of the Student Leadership Framework is foundation leadership, level II is advanced leadership and level III is experiential leadership. Training is being conducted for the student leaders to nurture their leadership qualities which are essential for tomorrow’s future in a global society. |
|
FRIENDS@Fernvale Programme |
FRIENDS@Fernvale Programme is a dynamic integration programme which focuses on building good relationships among all students of Fernvale and to help International Students (IS) integrate into the school environment. International students form 11% of the total student population and most of them came from China, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines and India.
To encourage our international students and affirm them as part of the school community, the international students are brought on an LJ together with a friend of their choice, a local student who has helped him/her to integrate and adapt to the school community. Together they get to understand Singapore better and hence forge deeper bonds through this shared experience. |
|
Form Teacher Guidance Period |
Form Teacher Guidance Period is a protected time (carried out weekly, 30 minutes per week) for form teachers to conduct Form Teacher Guidance Period (FTGP) lessons in class. The objectives of the FTGP are to:
- Facilitate the relationship-building interaction between teacher and students in class.
- Implementation of SEL in FTGP lessons to enhance teacher-student relationship.
- Provide explicit teaching of SE skills to equip students with SE competencies.
Form Teacher has to carry out FTGP & SEL lessons and interaction activities based on the FTGP Scheme of Work. The interaction time focuses on creating trust and support among the form teacher and students and allows the creation of a safe and positive climate in the class where students are able to express their inner feelings and thoughts without prejudice from teacher and peers. All class decisions are to be made through discussion and consensus. The FTGP lessons also promote respect and confidentiality and form positive class identity. It enables teacher and students to value one another’s differences and enhances the class dynamics and synergy. We hope to achieve active participation and mutual affirmation among peers. Form teachers are also encouraged to actively observe, identify and affirm students who display an attitude of give and take. |

Partnership with Stakeholders |
Building quality relationships provide great leverage points for any learning organization. This is carried out at different levels – SAC, parents and external organisations. Some programmes introduced include:
- BallPark and School Family Education Programmes
- Satellite Partnership Programme with Fernvale Gardens School (MINDS)
- Sengkang Floating Wetland Resource Package with PUB
|
|
a. BallPark and School Family Education (SFE) Programmes |
The Ball Park Programme’s main intent is to foster parent and child bonding through sports related activities. It also hopes to promote the idea of good dietary habits and healthy lifestyle. Collaborating with MCYS SFE programme, the school also organizes parenting talks on Saturday mornings. The IP Heads also use this platform to share useful tips with parents on how to better support their children in their academic work (e.g., Mathematics Workshop for Parents). |
|
b. Satellite Partnership Programme with Fernvale Gardens School (MINDS) |
Together with MOE Psychological Services Branch and Fernvale Gardens School, we held an envisioning exercise in 2010 to establish the satellite partnership programme between Fernvale Gardens School and Fernvale Primary.
- Recess Buddy and Play@Recess Programmes
Recess Buddy and Play@Recess are programmes that have started in 2011 to provide opportunities for social interactions between students from both schools. Our students are the buddies for Fernvale Gardens School students, assisting them in using cash to buy food and interacting during the meal and play sessions. Most importantly, we want Fernvale Gardens students to feel that they are our family members and be included in the community. Also, this is a platform for our students to reach out to the community and learn to serve with their hearts.
- Project Friendship and Captain Friendship Programmes
As part of the satellite project, the AEDs from Fernvale Primary, and the psychologists and social workers from Fernvale Gardens School have conducted group work on a friendship theme. students whom both schools identified are able to demonstrate interest in making social contact but lack some social skills in interacting appropriately with others. The combined sessions provide a platform for these students to put the skills that they have learnt into practice. The group activities also create an opportunity for students from the SPED school to interact and understand how it is like working with students from mainstream school and vice versa. |
|
c. Sengkang Floating Wetland Resource Package Project with PUB |
The Sengkang Floating Wetland Resource Package Project aims to educate our students to learn more about environmental issues such as water conservation in Singapore and keeping our waters clean. Our Primary 5 Environment Monitors have developed a resource package which includes learning stations and activity worksheets for future learning trails at Sengkang Floating Wetland. The Primary 5 Environment Monitors will be the spokespersons in promoting PUB ABC Waters (Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters).
The Character and Citizenship Education Department have initiated a joint CME CIP project with the following themes and learning outcomes for each level: |
|
Community Involvement Programme (CIP) |
Community Service Starts from the Home (with Parental Engagement) |
- P1 & P2 Levels: Home Engagement Activity focusing on the CME & school value ‘Responsibility’
Learning Outcome: Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve personal well-being and effectiveness. |
|
Community Service Starts from the School |
- P3 & P4 Levels: Powerpoint or scrap book presentation focusing on school values (Graciousness, Integrity, Responsibility, Resilience and Respect)
Learning Outcomes:
- Apply moral reasoning, display responsibility in decision making, and demonstrate integrity to stand by moral principles and shared values.
- Develop social awareness and demonstrate interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships.
|
|
- P5 level: Powerpoint or poster presentation focusing on Environmental Theme such as ‘Recycle, Reuse and Reduce’ or ‘Saving our Earth’ and etc
- P6 level: Donation Drive ‘Toy for The Heart’ for a charitable organisation
Learning Outcome:
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect on and respond to community, national and global issues, as an informed and responsible citizen
- Demonstrate care for and contribute actively towards improving the lives of others to build a bright future for ourselves and to progress together as one nation.
For example, both Primary One and Primary Two students will need to complete home engagement activities by doing simple household chores and parents will need to endorse once their children have completed the activities. Students can either take photographs or draw pictures of themselves during their involvement in the household chores. We hope to encourage our students to develop their responsibilities by starting at home with the support from parents. Through the home engagement activities, students will also recognise their strengths and values (SE competencies).
The Primary Three and Primary Four students will complete either an individual or group project and they can research more on the school values. Through group work, students will have more opportunities to work with others and learn to be respectful when it comes to differences. For the upper primary students, we aim to develop them to be more responsive to community, national and global issues. Hence, Primary Five students will focus on projects related to the environmental issues and Primary Six students will look into raising funds for charitable organisations. We hope to see our upper primary students learn how to make responsible decisions and grow to be responsible citizens with a heart to serve.
The CME and CIP Projects will be graded based on CME/CIP assessment rubrics, and students will be awarded with certificates and prizes once they have fulfilled the criteria of the assessment grading. |
